Mornings bring me to an eastfacing porch,
eyes on a creek,
and it seems I’m watching the current of time
from a stillpoint.
How many times have I encountered
those molecules elsewhere –
drinking them in,
playing in their tumult?
I could stand on the shore,
but every day I step into the stream,
an iciness whose only thought is to flow.
Little beings tumble about in the water:
Twigs collide, raft together then separate,
one shipwrecked,
one swept on to the lake, the river, the sea.
Leaves circle and cling in occasional pools.
I walk on slick rocks that solidly bear my weight,
or dislodge beneath me and crash me to my knees.
I stay barefoot.
I wade, though the cold makes me shudder.
I wade, though I long for the land.
