This thread if for green-power technology: wind, solar, etc.

There are some innovating projects and inventions out there and some great work being done. Let's condense some of it in this thread. Add a comment, post a link.

MARS -- floating wind turbine

Helium-filled blimp with curved fins that harness winds at altitudes between 180 and 300 meters. The fins spin the aircraft's midsection, rotating generators at each end.

quietrevolution wind turbine
Presently only available in the UK

From the website

What are the advantages of quiet revolution turbines?
quietrevolution is a vertical axis wind turbine that we have designed especially for the built environment
This means that it:
- is much more appropriate for winds near and around buildings, which frequently vary in direction
- is quieter because the blade tip speed is lower is more easily integrated in buildings and on towers.
- quietrevolution’s triple-helix blade shape minimises noise and vibration and improves efficiency by creating an even driving force from the wind.

Using real wind data, our modelling shows that QR produces 20% - 40% more energy than a conventional similar sized-HAWT in a typical location near buildings, where the wind is turbulent.

A good website for all things wind is: www.wind-works.org by Paul Gipe. There is a lot of hype out there about wind power. This is a helpful site for getting some real information and weeding out the baloney.
